The Khoekhoegowab Personality Inventory: The Comparative Validity of a Locally Derived Measure of Traits

Objective: This study explores a personality inventory derived from the results of an indigenous lexical personality. From 272 most commonly used descriptors in Khoekhoegowab, most-spoken extant Khoesan click languages southern Africa, 11-factor model personality-trait structure was identified. Here, Khoekhoegowab Personality Inventory (KPI) created based on those results. Its psychometric properties, convergent and divergent validity its scales, incremental over Big Five Six traits for predicting physical mental health, religious practice attitudes, income are reported. Methods: Two to five key terms were selected each 10 KPI scales: Temperance, Prosocial Diligence, Gossip, Honesty/Morality, Temper, Implacability, Humility, Vanity, Resiliency vs. Agitation, Courage Fear. These 38 total items administered large sample adult speakers Namibia ( N = 632), together with imported inventories translated into Khoekhoegowab: 30-item Questionnaire (QB6), General Self-Reported Health, Cascades Mental Health Assessment, Satisfaction Life Scale, Duke Religion Index. The properties intercorrelations subscales explored, their predictive ability other variables is compared that QB6. Results: Due small number scale, poor internal consistency anticipated, but scales' somewhat better than R-square change by as whole, after accounting age gender, indicted scales explained more variance QB6 almost all criterion variables. Replication established associations mixed: largely expected Resiliency, Conscientiousness, Honesty, less so Agreeableness Extraversion. Conclusions: had some advantages health. In particular, four Agitation predicted lower scores problem scales. Given psychological-care needs Namibia, this might be non-intrusive screener.
